Major Overseas Cities’ Strategy for Using Unique Venues and Actual Cases 5. Use of Shurijo Castle in Okinawa, Japan

5. Use of Shurijo Castle in Okinawa, Japan

G-8 Summit held at Shurijo Castle listed as UNESCO World Heritage
Shurijo Castle Park in Okinawa, Japan has Shuri Castle, which was the political, diplomatic, and ritual center of the ancient Ryuku Kingdom and is listed in 2000 as UNESCO World Heritage. In the same year, Kyushu-Okinawa G-8 Summit was held in Okinawa. Notably, a dinner reception for the leaders of the countries was held in the courtyard of Shurijo Castle park to wide acclaim. With a dinner and performances included, the dinner reception was an opportunity to display the Japanese tradition. Especially, the dinner was meaningful, as it proceeded in the main building of Shuri Castle.

Following the G-8 Summit, various events have been held
Before the G-8 Summit, the Shurijo Castle Park was used to a limited extent for private events, and afterwards, the place came to be used both for private and public events. In addition to dinners inside the castle, various events can be held throughout the park, so it is often used for outdoor events on a fine day.

Kadena Air Base, another unique venue available in Okinawa
Kadena Air Base was built following Japan’s defeat in the Second World War. Currently, 20% of the US forces stationed in Okinawa use the facilities. The US military post has a lot of space that can be used as sports hall and auditorium. While negotiation is under way, opening the facilities doesn’t seem so easy. As MICE events have a lot of distinguished guests coming from various countries, they will include persons who can pose sensitive political issues for Japan. This serves as a major stumbling block to the negotiation, but if they pull it off through negotiating to open up the military base, it will draw spotlight as a unique venue with distinctive attraction.
